Frequently asked Questions

Do you accept New In Person clients at the bI clinic?

Yes,

We have been providing physical therapy to patients for over 14 years, 8 of those years were spent practicing in California, working with the military vets, Navy Seals, volunteering time to help US Olympic and Paralympic athletes out of the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center, as well as working with active adults and Medicare recipients. We also have worked with home-care agencies and retirement homes.

In 2021 we decided to move our PT clinic back to Washington State and Dr. Greg Spooner’s hometown. The PNW’s incredible nature, mountain trails and Greg’s family were calling so we opened our new location serving local clients. The local word is quickly spreading of a “home grown” physical therapist who has returned to Kitsap County.

Do YOU accept my insurance?

We are currently in-network/contracted with the following insurance providers: Tricare, Medicare Part B, Regence Blue Shield of Washington, First Choice Health Network, and Washington Department of Labor & Industries (L&I).

For all other PPO insurance plans, FizioLogix Physical Therapy is an “out-of-network provider”. Many PPO plans have good out-of-network coverage, and if you’ve met your annual out-of-pocket maximum they typically pay 100% of your visits, otherwise your sessions will count towards your out of pocket costs and are often partly covered (about 50% of costs). You also have the option to self-pay and submit your claim to your insurance company to receive a partial or full reimbursement depending on your plan.

Not sure how to check your PT benefits? To help demystify this process click here to download a simple worksheet (.doc) to ensure you obtain all of the necessary information. Please contact us if you have any additional questions or concerns or want us to help you figure out your benefits, we’d be happy to do that on your behalf.

Please note: If you have a HMO or EPO insurance plan, your insurance will not cover your PT visits with us. 100% of costs are out of pocket for you.

Why don’t you accept my insurance?

Some insurance companies don’t recognize the value of a low risk, non invasive therapy such as physical therapy and its ability to help get you better faster, or to get you back up to speed after surgery. Some insurance companies only cover outdated treatment plans leaving an experienced physical therapist without too many options to fully customize your treatment plan based on prior documented success cases which have been proven to get you better quicker and lower your chances for reinjury.

We feel that you deserve more than this and want to be in the best position to deliver unmatched care to get you healed faster. Speak to us about your rehab goals and we’ll recommend the best approach for your therapy.

Choosing to pay for your services out of pocket will ultimately lead to paying less for care, needing fewer physical therapy visits, getting better outcomes (getting you back to feeling and doing what you love faster), and reduced spending on copays and unnecessary visits (compared to visiting other PT clinics). Whereas most physical therapy clinics see clients 2-3x/wk and can only treat you in a way that’s fully covered by insurance, we usually see you 1-2x/wk, and make it a point to ensure that you are staying on track outside of PT through giving you all necessary resources to learn how to manage your situation with confidence and autonomy. Often times you end up healing 2-3x faster this way.

The results are injury prevention in the future, and a better rehab process with recovery in a fraction of the time (depending on the injury). How can we ignore advocating on your behalf? Your PPO plan may have out-of-network PT benefits - Click here to download a worksheet to help guide you through the process (.doc) or contact us and we’ll check your insurance for you. Our goal is to provide you the best treatment that can get you healed in the shortest amount of time so you can get back to work and doing what you love.

Please note that we do balance billing on all out-of-network treatments and you are responsible for paying whatever your insurance doesn’t cover. We have fixed fees for all of our treatments. Don’t hesitate to ask us about them.

General PT Questions

What is Physical Therapy?

Frequently, when you need to recover from an injury, surgery, an accident, disease or abnormalities, or random aches and pains, physical therapy (PT) will often be recommended to you as the first step in your recovery process. Physical therapy in short focuses on the physical health of the patient, targeting the interplay of your bones, joints, tendons, muscles, and nerves. physical therapy also helps when a person’s body is not functioning at what is considered normal range of motion for them due to a heart attack, stroke or a fall; or are dealing with a neurological disease; or even facing aging or incontinence. As we get older, our body may change in a way that affects our function and quality of life. Physical Therapy helps to restore functionality and retain a person's independence.

How effective is physical therapy?

Physical therapy is a great solution for all ages. Whether you play sports and need to increase your strength or performance, get injured or need to rehabilitate after a surgery, or face limitations due to aging, physical therapy has proven itself to be the best and the least invasive way to get you back to living your life. If you want to stay active and independent for as long as you can; stay mobile, free from chronic pain and pain killers, avoid injections or surgery (if possible), and best of all, stay out of the doctor’s office, physical therapy is your best and most effective option.

We highly recommend adding physical therapy sessions with Dr. Greg Spooner to your overall wellness program or engage him to help you reach your current or future athletic, competitive, fitness or functioning goals to improve your strength, win gold and live an injury free life.

What does a Physical Therapist do?

A Physical Therapist will evaluate a person from the standpoint of their mobility, balance and strength. What are they having difficulty doing? What do they want to get back to doing? The basic premise of physical therapy is to look at a person's lifestyle needs, their physical dysfunction and limitations, and to determine the steps to take to improve the person’s physical condition. What stands Dr. Spooner apart from the rest of the pack is his interest in your “ecosystem.” Injuries don’t just stem from where it hurts, but could be due to a number of different factors that make you… you! We’d be sure to look into other factors surrounding sleep habits, fueling, your #1 & #2 habits and frequencies, any past injuries etc etc. Most importantly, it’s about you, and what makes you you.

What should I wear During a Physical Therapy treatment?

Make sure you wear comfortable clothing with easy access to the body part that needs to be worked on such as shorts, yoga pants, sports bra (for females) with a tank top or t-shirt over it that will allow you to be comfortable, move with ease, and for the PT to easily access the affected area. This applies to both telehealth and in-person PT sessions.

How many Physical Therapy sessions should I expect to have?

The number of sessions depends on the goal and injury. Most physical therapy sessions require at least 3 sessions and with more complex injuries 7-14 sessions. We will create the best plan of care that fits your needs, schedule and will help you get back to living a pain-free life in the shortest amount of time.

What happens during a typical Physical Therapy session?

Depending on the cause of your injury, your therapy sessions will comprise of a discovery session to evaluate what you do on daily bases that contributes to your injury or prolongs your recovery. If there's a loss of range of motion, you may also need to relearn to move correctly to avoid future injury, our Physical Therapist will help you regain a full range of motion and show you how to prevent the same injury in the future.

During a PT session, the therapist usually applies hands-on techniques such as joint mobilization for a stiff joint, soft-tissue mobilization including release techniques or massaging tight muscles. Manual manipulation uses careful, directed manual force to improve mobility in joints, connective tissue or skeletal muscles and helps with neurological function, blood flow and lymphatics to boost the healing process. PT always involves specific personalized exercises to retrain how to move your body in order to relieve or prevent pain, from a low-level stretch all the way to a well-rounded strengthening program.

Physical therapy modalities are exercises and hands-on techniques as well as rehabilitation technologies that relieve pain, reduce swelling, decrease muscle spasms and improve circulation. These modalities include BFR (Blood Flow Restriction) training, ultrasound, trigger-point pressure, dry needling, soft-tissue oscillation, electrical stimulation, traction, biofeedback, heat and ice. Our FizioLogix clinic does not offer biofeedback due to inconsistent results.

In addition, even though Dr. Spooner has been trained in dry needling while working at the Navy in San Diego, CA, today, Washington state is one of only 7 states that prohibits physical therapists from practicing dry needling based on the Attorney General opinion in 2016. Currently the only people in this state who can legally perform DN are MDs, RNPs, NDs. Please make an appointment to either of those providers and you can also contact us for referral or advice.

How long will it take for me to get better?

The length of recovery is determined by many factors unique to you and your injury. These factors include the extent of damaged tissue, how long you have had the injury, whether you are coming to us pre- or post-surgery, your nutritional habits, your emotional state, the state of your immune and endocrine systems, your genetic predisposition and other factors. We will review these factors during the evaluation. PT session may be required 1-2 times per week, for 4-7 weeks (most often), sometimes post surgery or severe injuries may extend into 18-21 sessions but those are rarely at our clinic because of our custom approach to PT. If your injury or surgery requires longer rehab, we will help you get the right authorization from your referring doctor or insurance provider.

If appropriate, upon evaluation, we can refer you to a physician or other practitioner who can address specific needs. Your body’s response to exercises and manual techniques will also help us estimate how long it could take for you to regain function. Dr. Spooner will empower your efforts with home-based exercises you will do on your own between PT visits to ensure consistent progress.

How to benefit the most from physical therapy session?

Communicate openly with your physical therapist: Your physical therapist needs to know your medical history, current symptoms, and any limitations you are experiencing to create the best plan of care. Speak openly about your pain level and how exercises and stretches make you feel.

  1. Be consistent: Regular therapy sessions are essential to your recovery. Your physical therapist will create a plan that includes exercises and stretches that you can do at home. Consistency with your home program is key to achieving your goals. Make sure you attend all of your PT sessions as scheduled.

  2. Be prepared: Wear comfortable clothing and appropriate footwear for your therapy session. If you have any questions about what to wear, ask your physical therapist.

  3. Ask questions: If you have any questions or concerns, speak up. Your physical therapist is there to help you and wants to make sure you understand your treatment plan.

  4. Set realistic goals: Work with your physical therapist to set realistic goals for your therapy sessions. Goals can motivate you and help you stay on track with your progress.

  5. Stay positive: A positive attitude can make a big difference in your recovery. Stay focused on your goals and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small they may seem.

  6. Practice self-care: Physical therapy can be challenging, and it’s essential to take care of yourself outside of your sessions. Make sure you are getting enough rest, eating a healthy diet, and managing stress.

By following these tips, you can make the most of your physical therapy sessions and work towards a successful recovery.
